What if NCAA tourney expanded to 95 teams?

Ok, I had to bring this up on the board.  I think expanding the tournament WOULD BE THE STUPIDEST THING THE NCAA could do!  Why?!  I guess it's all about the benjamins, but come on NCAA, you are already making TONS of money, just leave it as-is and don't dilute the tournament even more, and make the regular season matter even less.  PLEASE.

Thoughts?

That's my vote  Grin

Like you said, everyone and their mom would be in the tourney if you added 95 teams. The bubble teams would probably end up being teams that are around 500, which is stupid just like when 6-6 teams make it to bowls. I hope they don't do it, but it is all about that pay pah. That's about 15 more games to televise and another few days for the tv contracts to get more ad money.

I am only for adding teams if EACH of the 95/96 teams gets a legitimate NCAA experience. The play-in winner does not.

ADDITIONALLY, it would have to be automatic bids for the regular season champion and tournament champion of each league. I think that'd make the season's body of work more valuable. Doesn't the NAIA do something similar?

If you do this - get rid of the NIT, since that's where the regular season champions go.

FYI - the women's NIT takes the top team from every conference that did not make the NCAA. So, in some leagues - you are talking about the #6 or #7 team. In some, the reg season champ who came short in the tournament, etc...

I agree that the NIT should definitely go if they expanded, which would be kind of sad since it was around before the NCAA tourney we all know and love.  That said, I am still vehemently opposed to this.  I heard Mike Greenberg and Doug Gottlieb or Andy Katz or someone propose expansion to 68 teams.  Which, I would guess would just mean 3 more play in games, but that is just my guess.

I honeslty don't remember how the NAIA does it...that is definitely sad...but yes, I believe you are correct, the regular season champ and tourney champ make it in...and the NAIA is only 32 teams.

Yeah, I heard them talking about the 68 teams. It would make sense too, but I say keep it at 65 or go to 95-96. I think it's probably going to happen because people will watch and companies will sponsor to watch all the games. And don't kid yourselves if you think they're doig this for anything other than $$.

I like the idea of reg season champs getting an auto bid because the regular season would still matter; although less, but it'd still matter.

What do you if the regular season and tourney champ are the same team? That's just another at-large you give to one of the first 4 "out" teams I suppose??
